About Valerie Richards
Valerie has always had a personal and professional interest in improving and maintaining quality of life in those with chronic medical conditions.
She has a background in business promoting medical products and healthcare services through education and training and has instructed and worked
with patients, families, social service and medical professionals. Her approach is comprehensive with an emphasis on the lifestyle and personal
preferences of the individual, as well as the family situation. A personal family journey with Alzheimer's has created her passion to help others manage
life transitions and maintain family relationships through progressive dementia.
Valerie & her father, Bert
Valerie became interested in dementia after her father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and she began directing his care management. She has
educated herself about Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia and senior issues through study, participation at professional forums, and through
her personal experience. She has now been through the progression of Alzheimer's with her father and father-in-law, and is one of the family members
making care decisions for her mother-in-law who lives with the results of a major stroke. The Alzheimer's journey with her dad ended with his death in
early 2011, but she continues to share the experience in her work with others coping with progressive dementia.
Valerie's approach is based on the philosophy that individuals may have the same disease but they have different journeys because of their background and life experience, and
care decisions are very individual. Information is vital to help families prepare for, and cope with, the progression of dementia and enable them
to provide the best quality of life for their loved one. She recognizes that there is a stigma around dementia and Alzheimer's, as well as the aged
in our culture, and she is committed to increasing knowledge and understanding to help in coping within the family and greater community.
Valerie's formal education, training and experience includes:
- Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, with a minor in Sociology
